Our Philosophies

Over the years, Voices on the Border has developed a few basic philosophies that guide our work:

1. Accompaniment requires an on-the-ground perspective and should be driven by a community’s clear vision for development.

2. Community development is only possible when based in equality, civic participation, and local control.

3. Local control means that all outsiders, including civil society organizations, as well as municipal, national, and international government institutions, are accountable first to the communities they serve, and that the communities are empowered to hold the outsiders accountable.

4. Empowered communities have access to information about policies and initiatives that affect their development vision and wellbeing.

5. Our Salvadoran partners are peers in an international movement to promote social justice and sustainable development.
