Solange Muller
Solange Muller began working in the Colomoncagua refugee camps in Honduras in July 1981 as a nutritionist. She worked with Caritas, a Catholic social services agency that ran the food program in the refugee camps. She was responsible for the 6 nutrition centers and she developed a training program for the refugee women working in the nutrition centers. She also worked alongside Medecins San Frontiers in developing and implementing the health promoter training program for the health workers in the clinics in the camps.
In 1982 Solange was hired by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Honduras as a Program Assistant. She coordinated the local and international agencies that provided relief services to over 6,000 Salvadoran refugees in the Colomoncagua refugee camps to assure that all the refugees' material needs were met. She also organized regular program staff meetings with the relief agencies and coordinated the work with the refugee camp coordinators.
In 1983 Solange worked as a Protection Officer with the UNHCR in Colomoncagua, Mesa Grande, and el Tersoro refugee camps. She negotiated with local Honduran military and immigration officials to assure the protection of the Salvadoran refugees living in the different UN camps.
Solange now serves as member of the Voices on the Border Board of Directors.
